The Lee Boys | Funky Leap Jam 02.24.12

“Best” is a relative and subjective term, so let me instead use the word “favorite.”  In December, at Ace’s in Bradenton, the Lee Boys played my favorite musical performance of all time.  Two weeks later, they matched it with a great opening set in Clearwater for Tedeschi Trucks Band.  I thought that was about as good as it could get.

I was wrong.  The Lee Boys hit a new astral plane last night in Lakeland at the Funky Leap Jam.  When I asked Roosevelt about how strong the set was, especially the first tune (a new one, I think), he said, “We thought we really had to bring it.”  THAT is the understatement of the century.  I am really hoping that whoever was taping will put the show up soon.

One last thought.  Earlier in the week, I was thinking about the upcoming Experience Hendrix show in Clearwater, which will be great.  But I opined that Roosevelt would be able to stand tall in that company.  So, after killing it on “Superstition > We Want the Funk > Superstition,” Roosevelt and the Lee Boys closed last night’s performance with “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).”  He set the bar pretty high!

For those in the Tampa area, I’d recommend catching them at the Gasparilla Music Festival on March 10th at Curtis Hixon Park with Rebirth Brass Band, Alvin Youngblood Hart and lots more.
