Laurel Pop Festival | Laurel Race Track 07.11.69

My first FESTIVAL:First night of the Laurel Pop Festival (July 1969):

in order of appearance:

Buddy Guy — never saw a blues act before
The Edwin Hawkins Singers — “Oh, Happy Day” and more — really good
this English band nobody had heard of — Jethro Tull — what’s this guy doing in his bathrobe with a flute?
Al Kooper and a 20-piece orchestra (well, there were a lot) — great
Johnny Winter — WOW
Led Zeppelin — AWESOME — everything ran long all evening. Finally, the promoter pulled the plug, appropriately, during “Communication Breakdown,” with Plant still wailing and Bonham pounding away.

I was grounded because we didn’t get home until after 2 AM. The next night featured the Guess Who, Zappa, and Sly, but it was cool and rainy, and the crowd made a bonfire out of the chairs.
